1947 - Woodrow "Chubby" Auge and Irvin "Tubby" Frese founded Chubby & Tubby's in Seattle, WA.
2001 - The company operated 3 variety stores.
2003 - The company was liquidated.

DANNERS 5 & 10 ~ 3D DISCOUNT STORES

Based in Indianapolis, IN, Danner's Inc. operated the Danners 5 & 10 stores and 3D Discount stores chains.
1985 - The company closed its Danners 5 & 10 chain.
1986 - Danners Inc. operated 35 3D Discoount Stores in IN, IL and MI.
1987 - Indian LP purchased the company and merged it into its Maxway Corp.
1988 - Maxway Corp. closed 17 3D Discount Stores and filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection.
1989 - Maxway liquidated what remained of the original company.

 

DUCKWALL - ALCO STORES

1901 - A.L. Duckwall founded Duckwall 5 & 10 Cent Store in Abilene, Kansas.
1968 - The company began opening larger discount stores named ALCO.
1985 - With 127 ALCO stores and 33 Duckwall stores in 14 states, Duckwall-ALCO was purchased by the company's managers.
2008 - The company operates 205 ALCO stores and 59 Duckwell stores in 22 states.

BEN FRANKLIN STORES

1877 - Butler Brothers was founded as a mail-order wholesaler of general merchandise supplying independent variety store owners.
1927 - With over 100,000 mail order customers, Butler Brothers sold Ben Franklin franchises to independent variety store owners.
1951 - Sam Walton, later the founder of Wal-Mart, opened Walton 5 & 10 with a Ben Franklin franchise in Bentonville, AR.
1953 - Walton opened a second 5 & 10 cent store in Fayetteville, AR with a Ben Franklin franchise.
1959 - Butler Brothers sold the Ben Franklin chain.
1962 - With 16 stores, Sam Walton is Ben Franklin's largest franchisee.  Not able to convince Ben Franklin management to
          experiment with larger discount department stores, Walton opens his first Wal-Mart store in Rogers, AR without the help
          of Ben Franklin.
1990's - The company began opening company-owned Ben Franklin stores.
1996 - The company filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection.
1997 - The company liquidated.
1997 - Promotions Unlimited purchased the Ben Franklin name and began supplying the independently-owned stores.
2008 - The are 209 Ben Franklin Crafts stores and 123 Ben Franklin variety stores in operation.

W.T. GRANT / GRANT CITY

1906 - William T. Grant opened his first W.T. Grant Co. store in Lynn, MA.
1960's - Following Kresge and Woolworth's lead in opening discount department stores, the company launched its Grant City
            discount department stores.
1972 - William T. Grant died at age 96.  W.T. Grant Co. operated 1,200 stores.
1975 - The W.T. Grant Co. went out of business and closed all stores.

1915 - M.H. King founded King's Discount Stores in Burley, ID.
2008 - The company operates 32 King's Discount Stores in ID, UT, WY, MT, OR and NV.

 

JOHN'S BARGAIN STORES

1940's - David Cohen and his brothers took over his fathers store in New York.
1960's - Johns Bargain Stores operated 527 stores on the US east coast and Puerto Rico.
1967 - Johns Bargain Stores filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection and the Cohen family lost control of the company.
1970's - The company was liquidated.

S.H. KRESS CO.

1887 - Samuel H. Kress purchased a small stationary store in Nanticoke, PA.
1887 - Kress purchases a second store in Wilkes-Barre, PA.
1896 - S.H. Kress Co. was organized.
1900 - The company operated 12 stores.
1916 - With 51 stores, the S.H. Kress Co. is incorporated.
1940 - The company earned a net profit of over $ 5 million.
1944 - S.H. Kress Co. operated over 200 stores.
1955 - Samuel H. Kress passed away.  The company operated 264 stores.
1964 - Genesco acquired S.H. Kress Co.

Kress was well known for their stylish art deco buildings, many of which still stand today.

1989 - S.E. Nichols Inc. files for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection.
1990 - S.E. Nichols Inc. began rapidly transforming its Nichols Discount City department stores to its Pharmhouse deep discount
          drug stores format.  The company operates 34 Nichols Discount City stores and 10 Pharmhouse stores.

1993 - With 84 stores, the company liquidated.

1950 - Rose operated 130 stores.
1957 - The company is incorporated as Variety Wholesalers, Inc.
1971 - Pope's acquired Charlotte, NC-based Eagle Stores (52 stores).
1978 - The company acquired 54 McCrory/United stores in SC.
1980 - Variety Wholesalers acquired 118 Value Mart stores in MS, LA and AL.
1981 - The company acquired 145 Super Dollar stores in NC, VA and SC.
1984 - Variety Wholesalers acquired 53 P.H. Rose stores in NC, VA and SC.
1987 - Roses Stores operated 259 stroes.
1989 - The company acquired 106 Allied Stores in GA, SC and LA.
1990 - Variety Wholesalers acquired 33 Maxway stores in NC, SC and GA.
1992 - The company acquired 60 Bargain Town stores in AL, MS and GA.
1993 - Roses Stores filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection.
1994 - Roses Stores closed over 100 stores.
1995 - Roses Stores emerged from bankruptcy.
1997 - Variety Wholesalers acquired 106 Roses stores, operating in 10 southeastern states.
2003 - The company acquired 118 Bonus Stores / Bill's Dollar Stores in AL, GA, LA and MS.
2007 - Variety Wholesalers operated 440 stores in 14 southeastern states under the Popes, Roses, Maxway, Bargain Town,
          Value Mart, Super Saver, Super 10, Bill's Dollar Store and Super Dollar banners.

YELLOW FRONT STORES

1950's - Yellow Front Stores was founded in Phoenix, AZ.
1960's & 1970's - The company continued opening new stores.
Yellow Front Stores was acquired by CA-based supermarket Lucky Stores.
1987 - With 104 Yellow Front Stores locations in the Southwest, Lucky Stores sold Yellow Front Stores in an effort to avoid a
          hostile takeover.
1990 - Yellow Front Stores filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection.
