ACME FRESH MARKETS  (Ohio)
Acme Express ~ Click Department Stores ~ Y-Mart Drugs ~ Fred W. Albrecht Co.

1891 - Fred W. Albrecht opened a grocery store in Akron, OH.
1900 - Albrecht visited some of the Acme Markets stores in Philadelphia.  He was impressed with the way the bright yellow-
          painted stores and that there were "cash" stores. Upon his return to Akron, he closed his store for a week, painted it
          yellow inside and out, rearranged the stock and reopened as a cash store.  The store was called Acme #1.
1901 - The company opens Acme #2.
1904 - The company operates 6 stores.
1930's - There are 120 small, neighborhood stores.
2007 - There are 15 Acme Fresh Markets.

Acme also owned Click Department Stores and Y-Mart Drug Stores (later renamed Acme Express).  Both chains were closed in the 1990's.

ADAMS SUPER FOOD STORES  ~  ADAMS HOMETOWN MARKET

2008 - The company operates 8 supermarkets in Connecticut and Massachusetts under the Adams Hometown Market and
          Adams IGA Super Food Stores banners.

 

 

AFFILIATED FOODS SOUTHWEST  (Arkansas)
Model Markets  ~  Harvest Foods

Originally named Model Markets, Affiliated Foods Southwest is a wholesale food cooperative serving independent grocers in AR, LA, MS, OK, TN and TX.

ALASKA COMMERCIAL CO.  ~  AC VALUE CENTER  (Alaska)

1776 - Russia's Catherine the Great granted trading rights to the Russian-American Trading Company.
1867 - The company was renamed Alaska Commercial Co. when it was sold to San Francisco merchants Lewis  Gerstle and
          Louis Sloss.
1922 - The company was sold to a group of employees and re-named the Northern Commercial Company. The headquarters
          were move to Seattle.
1974 - The company was sold again. The department stores in Anchorage, Fairbanks and Kenai were sold to Nordstrom.
          The equipment and machinery division was sold to the Skinner Corporation of Seattle.
1977 - The remaining 11 stores were sold to the Community Enterprise Development Corporation of Alaska (CEDC).
1992 - Alaska Commercial Company was purchased from CEDC by The North West Company (NWC) of Canada.
1996 - Alaska Commercial Company operated 30 stores in rural areas of Alaska.

ALDI

1976 - Aldi, a German company, began in the U.S. with a few stores in Iowa.
2008 - The limited assortment, low priced grocery has 818 stores in the U.S.

AMELIA'S GROCERY OUTLETS  (Pennsylvania)

2008 - Amelia's Grocery Outlet operates 11 limited assortment grocery stores in Pennsylvania.

 

ANDRONICO'S  (California)

1929 - Frank Andronico founded Andronico's in San Francisco, CA.
2008 - Andronico's operates 11 stores in the San Francisco area.

 

APPLE MARKETS  (Tennessee)

Apple Markets are independently-owned neighborhood supermarkets supplied by Associated Grocers of Kansas City.

ASSOCIATED GROCERS OF BATON ROUGE

Associated Grocers of Baton Rouge services independently-owned supermarkets.  The company's store banners include:
Bi-Lo, Big Star, Borque's Super Store, Breaux Mart, Calandro's Supermarket, Hi Nabor, Jerry Lee's, Langenstein's,
Oak Point Fresh Market, Rouses Supermarkets and Wayne Lee's.

Apple Markets, ALPS, Cash Saver, Country Mart, Price Chopper, Price Mart, Sun Fresh and Thriftway.

1934 - Associated Grocers of Seattle was founded in Seattle servicing independently-owned supermarkets in the
          Pacific Northwest.
2004 - Associated Grocers serviced Northwest supermarket chains including:  Alaska Commercial Company, Brown & Cole,
          Central Market, Fuller's, Haggen, Larry's Markets, Market Place, Metropolitan Markets, Neighborhood Market,
          Pay-Less Supermarkets, Red Apple Markets, Roth's, Thriftway, Zupan's Markets and many independent supermarkets.
2007 - Unified Grocers acquired Associated Grocers of Seattle.
