1872 - Child's Grocery Co. is founded in Pennsylvania.
1887 - Acme Tea Company is founded in Pennsylvania.
1888 - George Dunlap Company is founded in Pennsylvania.
1890 - The Bell Company is founded in Pennsylvania.
1891 - A grocery store named "The House That Quality Built" is founded in Philadelphia, PA.
1917 - American Stores Company is founded when five small grocery chains (Child's, Acme Tea, George Dunlap, Bell Co. and
          A House That Quality Built) merge.
1920 - Acme Markets has 1,223 stores
1925 - Acme Markets has 1,792 stores
1946 - A proposed acquisition of Grand Union Supermarkets is turned down by Grand Union stockholders.
1961 - Acquired California-based Alpha Beta supermarkets.
1970's - In order to compete with lower priced grocery retailers such as ShopRite and Pathmark which did not offer trading
          stamps, Acme Markets launched its Super Saver discount grocery chain.
1979 - Company was purchased by Skaggs Companies.  The newly merged company is named. American Stores Company.
1984 - American Stores purchases Jewel T and Osco Drugs.
1988 - Company purchased California-based Lucky Stores and Sav-On Drugs.
1991 - Due to an anti-trust suit, the company is forced to sell 74 Jewel stores in TX and FL, 145 Alpha Beta stores in CA,
          and 59 drug stores.
1992 - The company reorganizes into 3 divisions:
                 1)  Jewel Companies (Jewel, Acme Markets and Star Markets).
                 2)  Lucky Stores.
                 3)  American Drug Stores
1997 - American Stores Company becomes publicly traded and L.S. Skaggs loses control.
1998 - The company sold its Buttrey Food & Drug chain to Albertsons.
1998 - American Stores Company is acquired by Albertsons.
          At the time it is acquired, American Stores Company operates 1,558 stores in 25 states under the Acme Markets,
          Jewel, Lucky, Osco and Sav-On banners:
                    267 food/drug combination stores
                    540 supermarkets
                    751 drug stores
2005 - Supervalu, CVS/pharmacy and and investment group led by Cerberus Capital Management acquired Albertsons for
          $ 17.4 billion.
2008 - Supervalu operates 129 Acme supermarkets in Delaware, Maryland, New Jersey and Pennsylvania. Acme Markets
          is the leading food and drug retailer in the Philadelphia market.

SUPER SAVER SUPERMARKETS

Originally developed by Acme Markets in the 1970's as the company's discount supermarket banner, Super Saver is now used
by Albertson's LLC for its no-frills supermarket banner (same logo but now yellow instead of red).
