the BI-LO supermarket chain
with stores in the Carolinas and
Georgia.
1981 - Carlisle, PA-based Giant Food Stores is acquired by Ahold.
1988 - Ahold acquires Ohio-based First National Stores (Finast,
Edwards Super Food Stores).
1991 - New York-based Tops Markets is acquired by Ahold.
1994 - Ahold acquires Red Food Stores with 55 supermarkets in
Tennessee and Georgia from French retailer Promodes S.A.
1995 - Ahold USA
acquires the 28 store, Elizabeth, New Jersey based Mayfair Super
Markets (the largest franchisee of
NJ-based Foodtown supermarkets) and merges them with its Edwards Super Food Stores division.
The Mayfair stores take
the Edwards Super Food Stores name.
1995 - Ahold acquires the 17 store Long Island, NY based Melmarkets
Foodtown chain.
1996 - Ahold agrees to sell 26 Edwards Super Food Stores and 3 Stop
& Shop stores in an agreement with the Federal Trade
Commission in
order to win the FTC's approval to purchase New England-based Stop &
Shop.
1996 - Ahold converts its Long Island, NY-based Melmarkets Foodtown
stores to Edwards Super Food Stores.
1998 - Ahold acquires Landover, MD based Giant Food, Inc.
1999 - Ahold tries to purchase New Jersey-based Pathmark
Supermarkets but objections from the Federal Trade Commission
kill
the deal.
2000 - Ahold's Tops Markets acquires the New York-based Sugar Creek
convenience store chain.
2000 - Wholesale food distributor U.S. Foodservice is acquired by
Ahold.
2000 - Ahold acquires Chicago, IL based internet grocer Peapod, Inc.
2000 - The Tennessee based Golden Gallon convenience store chain is
acquired by Ahold.
2000 - Ahold's U.S. Foodservice acquires PYA/Monarch.
2001 - Ahold's U.S. Foodservice acquires Florida based Parkway Food
Service.
2001 - Ahold's U.S. Foodservice acquires Mutual Distributors, Inc.
2001 - Bruno's Supermarkets, Inc. is acquired by Ahold.
2001 - Ahold acquires U.S. food service operator Alliant
Foodservice, Inc.
2002 - St. Louis, MO based wholesale food distributor Allens Foods,
Inc. is acquired by Ahold.
2002 - Ahold's U.S. Foodservice acquires certain assets and
liabilities of Kansas City based wholesale food distributor Lady
Baltimore Foods, Inc.
2003 - The Pantry, Inc. acquires the Golden Gallon convenience store
chain from Ahold.
2004 - Ahold sells its BI-LO and Bruno's supermarket chains to
investment firm Lone Star Funds.
2005 - Ahold exits the U.S. convenience
store business when it sells its remaining U.S. convenience stores
(Wilson Farms,
Neighborhood Food Stores, Sugarcreek Stores and Tops Xpress) to WFI Acquiaition, Inc.
The stores continue to
operate under the Wilson Farms and Sugarcreek
banners.
