It's Not Joe Albertson's Supermarket Anymore.

1939 - Joe Albertson, a former district manager at Skagg's United Stores, opens his first grocery store in Boise, Idaho.
1945 - Albertsons incorporates with six stores.
1951 - Albertsons opens its first food and drug combination store.
1950's - Albertsons operates stores in four states:  ID, OR, UT and WA.
1959 - Albertsons becomes a publicly traded company with 62 supermarkets, 5 drug stores and a department store.
1969 - Albertsons partners with Skaggs Companies.
1975 - Sales reach $ 1 billion.
1977 - Albertsons is the nation's 4th largest supermarket chain with 994 stores in 25 states.
1978 - Skaggs Albertsons acquires a 47-store supermarket chain in Southern California.
1979 - Skaggs Albertsons has 365 stores and sales of over $ 2 billion.
1979 - Skaggs and Albertsons dissolve their partnership.  Jointly held assets are divided evenly.
1991 - Acquires Jewel-Osco Store locations in Florida from Skaggs.
1993 - Joe Albertson dies.
1998 - Albertsons acquires several Seessel's, Smitty's, Super One Foods, Buttrey Food & Drug and 15 Bruno's Stores.
1998 - Albertsons merges with American Stores Company (Acme Markets, Super Saver, Lucky Stores, Alpha Beta,
          Osco Drugs, Sav-On Drugs) to become the nation's largest supermarket chain.
1998 - Federal Trade Commission forces Albertson's to sell 117 stores in California, 19 in New York and 9 in  Minnesota.
          31 stores are sold to Certified Grocers of  California, 27 to Raley's, 40 stores and 2 sites to Ralph's, 43 stores and 1 site
          to Stater Bros. Markets and 4 stores and 1 site to Vons.
2000 - Albertsons operates over 2,400 stores in 38 states under the names of Albertsons, Acme Markets, Lucky Stores, Jewel,
          Osco Drugs and Sav-On Drugs.
2001 - The company sold its free-standing Osco Drug Stores in the Northeast to Jean Coutu Group (Brooks, Eckerd), a
          Canadian drug store company.
2002 - Albertsons exited the San Antonio, Texas market, closing its remaining 20 stores there.
2002 - Albertsons sold its Sessel's supermarket chain in Memphis, TN and parts of Mississippi to Schnucks and pulled out
          of the Houston, TX market by closing its 43 remaining stores there.
2004 - Albertson's acquires Sainsbury's U.S. Supermarket business:  202 Shaw's and Star Markets in New England for $ 2.5
          billion.
2005 - Supervalu, CVS/pharmacy and and investment group led by Cerberus Capital Management acquired Albertsons for
          $ 17.4 billion.

AFTER THE DUST SETTLED...
As of June 2006, Albertson's retail stores have been divided as follows:
  • Supervalu has acquired 1124 stores in the deal, including:
    • Acme (134 locations)
    • Acme Express, Jewel Express, and Albertsons Express (107 fuel centers)
    • Albertsons (564 locations in Southern California, Idaho, Montana, Nevada, North Dakota, Oregon, Utah, Washington and Wyoming) - New Albertsons Inc.
    • Bristol Farms (11 locations)
    • Jewel and Jewel-Osco (198 locations)
    • Lazy Acres (1 location)
    • Max Foods (4 locations) (3 converted into Lucky Stores, 1 closed in July 2006)
    • Osco Pharmacy and Sav-on Pharmacy (906 pharmacies)
    • Save-A-Lot (2 stores franchised by Shaw's)
    • Shaw's (188 locations)
    • Star Market (20 locations)
    • Super Saver Foods (1 location)
    • Distribution centers (11 centers)
  • CVS has acquired all (approximately 702) of the stand-alone Osco Drug and Sav-on Drugs rebranding them all as CVS/pharmacy, though they are closing approximately 100 of the acquired stores.
  • The Cerberus-led group acquired:
    • Albertsons (655 locations in Arizona, Northern California, Colorado, Florida, Louisiana, Oklahoma and Texas) - Albertsons LLC
    • County Line Liquors (1 location)
    • Grocery Warehouse (1 location)
    • Jewel-Osco (2 locations)
    • Max Foods (2 locations)
    • Super Saver Foods (2 locations)

The agreement also included terms for dividing up distribution centers and other real estate and support operations,
as well as the sale of 26 Chicago-area Cub Foods from Supervalu to the Cerberus-led investor group. Since Cerberus
has taken control of the Cub Foods locations, Cerberus has announced that four locations (Algonquin, Bedford Park,
Chicago and Naperville) will be closed.
