C&K MARKET  (Oregon)
Ray's Food Place  ~  Shop Smart  ~  Price Less Foods  ~ Pharmacy Express

1956 - Raymond  Nidiffer purchased a 1/2 interest in C&K Market in Brookings, OR.
1963 - The original store was closed and a new, larger supermarket opened under the Ray's Food Place banner.
2004 - The company operates 51 stores.
2008 - C&K operates 59 stores under the Ray's Food Place, Price Less Foods, Shop Smart and Pharmacy Express banners in
          Oregon and California.


     

 

C-TOWN SUPERMARKETS (New York / New Jersey)

1975 - C-Town Supermarkets is founded in New York as a banner for independently owned supermarkets.
2006 - As the fifth largest food retailer in the metropolitan New York area, 200 independently owned supermarkets operate under
          the C-Town banner.

CALA FOODS / BELL MARKETS

1947 - Seven Cala brothers founded Cala Foods in San Francisco.
1949 - John Musso opened a supermarket in San Francisco under the name QFI.
1965 - Cala Foods purchases the Littleman Foods chain.
1973 - Cala Foods acquired QFI.
1976 - Jolly Markets is acquired by Cala Foods.
1996 - Ralph's Supermarkets acquires Cala Foods.
2006 - Ralph's sold 11 of the 13 Cala abdBell stores to Harley DeLano, a previous manager of the Cala chain.
2007 - DeLano chooses IGA as its primary supplier and the stores are renamed DeLano's IGA.  The location on Cala and
          Hyde Streets which is still owned by Kroger is the sole remaining store using the Cala name.

CAPUTO'S FRESH MARKETS  (Illinois)

1958 - Angelo Caputo founded Caputo's in Elmwood Park, IL.
2008 - A family-owned company, Caputo's Fresh Markets operates 6 stores in Illinois.
 

 

CARNIVAL FOODS  (Ohio)

Carnival Foods operates 3 supermarkets in Ohio.

 

CARTER'S (Michigan)

1952 - Carter's Foods was founded in 1952 by Theodore Carter, a former Kroger employee.
1954 - Carter's chose IGA as its primary supplier and opened its second store.
1966 - Carter's had 4 stores.
2000 - Carter's became 100% employee-owned.
2001 - Carter's operated 23 stores.  It becomes the first supermarket chain in Michigan to introduce S&H Greenpoints.
2006 - Carter's filed for bankruptcy protection and the remaining 14 stores were closed.
          Store locations are acquired by Family Fare (Spartan Stores) and Marsh Supermarkets.

 

CERTI SAVER SUPERMARKETS  (Illinois)

1940 - Certified Grocers of Midwest is founded in Illinois as a wholesale cooperative.
2006 - The company merged with Shultz Sav-O Stores (Fresh Brands).
2008 - Independent grocery store owners operate under the Certi Saver Supermarkets banner.

CHANATRY'S  (New York)

1912 - The Chanatry family immigrated to the U.S. and soon after opened a grocery store in Utica, NY.
1938 - The family opened their first supermarket, naming it Chantry's Super Food Market.
2006 - Chanatry's continues to operate a supermarket in Utica.

CHIEF SUPERMARKETS  (Ohio)

1951 - Ted and Karl Hench, owners of Hench's Meat Market and John Nolan, Jr., owner of Nolan's Grocery, together opened a
          grocery store in Defiance, OH.
2008 - Chief Supermarkets operates 8 supermarkets in Ohio.

COBORN'S  (Minnesota)
Cash Wise ~ Little Dukes ~ Holiday Stores

1921 - Chester Coborn opened a grocery store in Sauk Rapids, MN.
1970 - The company opened its first liquor store.
1979 - Coborn's launched its Cash Wise Food warehouse stores in Willmar, MN.
1986 - The company opened its first Little Dukes convenience store.
2008 - The company operates 20 Coborn's supermarkets, 9 Cash Wise warehouse stores and 29 convenience stores under the
           Little Dukes and Holiday Stores banners in the upper Midwest.

COMPARE FOODS  (NY, CT, RI, NC)
1978 - The Pena family opened their first supermarket in Queens, NY.
1989 - The Compare Foods name is used for the first time when Eligio Pena opens a supermarket in Freeport, NY.
2006 - The Pena family operates 15 supermarkets in NY, CT and RI.  Compare Foods stores are also opened in NC.

Price Chopper
1948 - Consentino's was founded in Kansas City, KS.
2008 - Consentino's operates 12 supermarkets in Kansas under the Price Chopper banner.

COOK UNITED  (Ohio)
Pick-N-Pay Supermarkets ~ Food Town ~ Uncle Bill's Discount Department Stores ~ Rink's Discount Department Stores

1921 - Max Freeman and Hyman Broder founded Cook Coffee Co in Cleveland, OH, operating retail coffee and tea home delivery
          in 15 states.
1951 - The company acquired the Cleveland-based, 10 store Pick-N-Pay supermarket chain.
1959 - Pick-N-Pay acquired the 24 store, Cleveland based Food Town chain.
1961 - The company entered the discount department store business when it acquired the 5-store Uncle Bill's chain.
1969 - While operating 70 supermarkets and 90 discount department stores, the company changed its name to Cook United.
1978 - First National Stores (Finast) acquired Pick-N-Pay.
1981 - The company acquired the 47 store  Rink's Discount Dept. Stores chain from Gray Drug Stores.
1984 - Cook United filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection.
1987 - The company filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection for a second time, closed its remaining Cleveland-area
          discount department stores and the company was liquidated.
