1893 - The Tenenbom
family opens the forerunner of Eagle's chain in Davenport, IL.
1921 - Eagle Kash and Karry opens as a small neighborhood market
in Quad-Cities, IL.
1952 - Eagle (5 stores) and the Tenenborn family's (8 stores)
merge. They take the name of United Supermarkets.
1954 - United and 10 Eagle Kash and Karry stores merge creating
Eagle-United Supermarkets.
1961 - The combined company is acquired by Chicago-based
Consolidated Foods Co. which operated 68 Piggly Wiggly stores.
1968 - California-based Lucky Stores acquired the Eagle and
Piggly Wiggly stores from Consolidated. The stores are
renamed
Eagle Discount
Supermarkets.
1981 - Eagle has 136 stores and sales of $ 1.2 million.
1987 - Lucky Stores sold a majority ownership of Eagle Food
Stores to New York-based Odyssey Partners.
1989 - Eagle became a publicly-traded company.
1999 - Eagle sold 5 Chicago-area stores leaving 90 stores in IL,
IO and IN.
2000 - The company filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection.
2003 - Eagle Food Stores ceased operations and closed its
remaining stores. Several of the former Eagle locations
were
acquired by Hy-Vee,
Kroger, Albertsons and Butera. The Downtown Eagle Corp.
was founded and acquired the two stores
in Clinton, IO and
Dubuque, IO and the rights to the Eagle County Market name which
the company continues to operate.
