GELSON'S SUPERMARKETS (California)

1951 - Brothers Bernard and Eugene Gelson open their first Gelson's Supermarket in Burbank, CA.
1964 - Arden Farms acquires the Los Angeles-based Gelson's Supermarket chain.  Arden also acquired the Los Angeles-based
          Mayfair Markets chain around this time.
1970's & 1980's - Arden was plagued with lawsuits and financial woes.
1971 - Arden merges with TelAutograph.  The merged company takes the name "Arden-Mayfair".
1986 - Arden sold 17 of its 39 stores.
1993 - Arden operates 7 Gelson's Supermarkets and 5 Mayfair Markets.
2007 - The company operates 17 Gelson's Supermarkets and 1 Mayfair Market in the Los Angeles area.

1923 - A.F. Geissler founded Geissler's Supermarkets in East Windsor, CT.
2008 - The company operates 6 supermarkets in Connecticut and Massachusetts.

 

GERLAND'S FOOD FAIR  (Texas)
Food Town ~ Grand Markets ~ Food Town Express ~ Check Cashing & More

1967 - A.J. Gerland founded Gerland's Food Fair in Houston.
2008 - Gerland's operates 15 supermarkets under the Gerland's Food Fair, Food Town and Grand Market banners, 2 Food Town
          Express fuel/convenience stores and 6 Check Cashing & More locations.

GIANT EAGLE  (Pennsylvania)
Giant Eagle Market District ~ Giant Eagle Express ~ GetGo

1918 - Giant Eagle is founded in Pittsburgh, PA.
1928 - Giant Eagle is sold to Kroger.
1931 - The originals owners regained ownership of Giant Eagle from Kroger and merged with the OK Grocery chain.
1990's - Giant Eagle acquired PA-based County Markets and began opening new stores in Maryland.
1997 - Giant Eagle acquired Ohio-based Riser Foods and converted their stores to Giant Eagle.
2004 - Giant Eagle acquired 9 former Big Bear Stores in Ohio.
2007 - Giant Eagle operates 156 company-owned and 69 franchised stores along with 128 GetGo Fuel Centers.

GIANT FOOD MARKETS  (New York)

1933 - The Akel family opened New York State's first self-service supermarket in Binghamton.
1939 - The company opened a second location in Binghamton which was featured at the NCR pavilion at the 1939 New York
           World's Fair.
1954 - The Akel family operated 4 Giant Food Markets.
2006 - There are 12 Giant Food Markets operating in New York State.

GOODING'S  (Florida)

1964 - The Gooding family establishes Gooding's supermarkets in Maitland, FL.
1992 - Gooding's has 18 stores.
1996 - Gooding's closes its Brevard County, Florida stores.
1999 - Gooding's closes 2 more stores.
2000 - Gooding's sold 9 of its supermarkets to Winn Dixie, leaving 3 in the
          tourist-rich Orlando area.
2005 - Gooding's filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection.

GREER'S FOOD TIGER  (Alabama)

1916 - Autry Greer and Sons, Inc. was founded in Mobile, AL.
2008 - Greer's operates 45 supermarkets and 11 liquor stores in AL, MS and FL under the Food Tiger, Fairhope Market,
          Robertsdale Market and Hurley Market banners.

GRAUL'S MARKETS  (Maryland)
"Your Good Food Grocer Since 1920"

1920 - Fred and Ester Graul founded Graul's Markets in Baltimore CIty, MD.
1945 - The Graul's son Harold and his wife Mary assumed ownership of Graul's.
1958 - The first Graul's Supermarket was opened in Cape St. Claire, MD.
2008 - Graul's operates 6 supermarkets in Maryland.

GRISTEDE'S  (New York)

1888 - Teenage brothers Diedrich and Charles Gristede open a grocery store in New York City.
1938 - There were 161 Gristede's grocery and liquor stores operating in New York and Connecticut.
1969 - The Gristede family sold the company to the Southland Corp.
1986 - Red Apple Group acquired Gristede's.
1993 - Red Apple Group acquired NY-based Sloan's Supermarkets.  Red Apple Group acquired Southland Corp.
1997 - All Sloan's supermarkets are renamed Gristede's.
2004 - Red Apple Group makes Gristede's a privately held company.
2006 - There are almost 50 Gristede's supermarkets in New York.

GROCERY OUTLET (California)

1946 - Canned Foods Grocery Outlet is founded in 1946 in San Francisco, CA.
1948 - Company is renamed US Markets.
1970 - Globe of California is acquired and the company is renamed Canned Foods.  Business concept converted to factory
          seconds, closeouts and discontinued product.
1884 - Sales reach $ 100 million.
1990 - Sales reach $ 250 million.
1992 - Stores are renamed Grocery Outlet to reflect expanded product line.
1995 - Grocery Outlet opens its 100th store.
2001 - Sales reach $ 500 million.
2007 - The company operates stores in California, Oregon, Washington, Idaho, Nevada and Arizona.
