1923 - David Javitch
opened Carlisle Meat Market in Carlisle, PA.
1929 - John Clemens began selling meat at the Lansdale Borough
Farmers Market in PA.
1930 - John Clemens opened a butcher shop in Lansdale, PA.
1936 - Javitch purchases a store in Lewistown, PA and named it Giant
Shopping Food Center.
1939 - Clemens adds groceries to his butcher shop and names it
Clemens Market.
1968 - Giant has 9 stores in PA.
1970 - Giant acquires MD-based Martin's Food Markets.
1981 - With 29 stores, Giant is acquired by Netherlands-based Royal
Ahold.
1988 - Giant opens 50th store.
1996 - Giant operates 75 stores.
1997 - Royal Ahold merged its Edwards Super Food Stores chain.
1999 - Clemens opens its first open-air specialty format store named
Foodsource by Clemens.
2000 - The Edwards chain leaves Giant and is merged with Royal Ahold-owned
Stop & Shop.
2004 - The first Martins Super Food Store is opened in NY.
2005 - The first Giant Super Food Store is opened in PA.
2006 - Giant acquired 14 stores of the 20 store Clemens Family
Market chain.
(The remaining 6 were sold to C&S Wholesale Grocers).
