1936 - Giant Food, Inc. is founded in Washington, DC.
1941 - Giant ventures into Virginia with a store in Alexandria.
1948 - Giant purchases Sheridan Bakery in Silver Spring, Md. and renames it Heidi Bakery.
1950's - Giant adds automatic doors, mechanized checkouts, and open display cases for meat and frozen foods to its stores.
1955 - The company forms Giant Construction Company to build its supermarkets and GFS Realty to handle its store leases.
1955 - Giant ventures into Maryland with a store in Baltimore.
1958 - Giant launches its Giant Department Stores format.
1959 - There are 9 Giant Department Stores in operation.
1959 - Giant has 53 stores.
1962 - The company opens its first food/drug combination store.
1979 - Giant is first supermarket chain to put computer-assisted checkout scanning equipment into use chain wide.
1982 - Giant launches its gourmet food store banner, Someplace Special, in Mclean, Va.
1994 - Giant begins northern expansion with plans to open stores in Delaware, New Jersey, and Pennsylvania under the
          Super G trade name. Great Britain based J. Sainsbury buys a non-controlling interest in Giant.
1995 - The 1224 Corporation gains control of company.
1998 - The company is acquired by Netherlands based Royal Ahold.
2006 - Ahold operates 202 Giant stores in MD, DE, NJ, DC and VA.
