1899 - Jewel was founded in Chicago by Frank Vernon Skiff as a door-to-door coffee delivery service.
1902 - Skiff partners with Frank P. Ross and the company is renamed Jewel Tea Company.
1932 - Jewel Tea Company acquires the 72 Chicago area Loblaw Groceteria stores.
1932 - Jewel acquires 4 Chicago area Middle West Stores and begins operating under the name Jewel Food Stores, Inc.
1934 - Jewel Food Stores and Jewel Tea Company merge.
1961 - Jewel acquires the Osco Drugstore chain.
1962 - The company launches its Jewel Grand Bazaar with a store which occupied a full city block in Chicago.
1966 - Jewel acquired Buttrey.  Many of the stores were converted to Jewel's combination format and renamed Buttrey-Osco.
1980's - The company brings its Illinois-based Eisner Food Stores chain under the Jewel Food Stores banner.
1981 - Jewel sold its home shopping service.
1983 - Jewel begins combining its Jewel Food Stores and Osco Drugstores under 1 roof (combination stores) and names
          these stores Jewel-Osco.
1984 - American Stores Company (Acme Markets) acquires Jewel.
1989 - American Stores Company begins opening Jewel-Osco stores in Florida.
1999 - Albertsons acquires American Stores Company.
2006 - Albertsons is acquired by SuperValu.  Free-standing Osco drugstores are acquired by CVS.

BUTTREY FOOD & DRUG
Buttrey was founded in Montana.

1962 - Buttrey opened its first superstore in Boise, ID in retaliation for Albertsons breaking a gentlemans agreement between both companies
          that they would stay out of each other's territories.  For many years this was Buttrey's highest grossing store.
1966 - Jewel acquired Buttrey.  Many of the stores were converted to Jewel's combination format and renamed Buttrey-Osco.
1980's - Buttrey expaned to 60 stores in MT, ND, MN, WA, OR, UT and ID.
1984 - Jewel is acquired by American Stores Company (Acme Markets) and Buttrey-Osco is renamed Buttrey Food & Drug.
1990 - American Stores Company sells Buttrey to Buttrey's managers.
1998 - Buttrey is acquired by Albertsons and most locations are renamed Albertsons.  7 stores are sold to Fred Meyer and renamed Smiths Food
          & Drug and 2 are sold to SuperValu and renamed Save-A-Lot.

1957 - Illinois-based Eisner's is acquired by Jewel.
