1931 - Walter and Anna Levandowski  founded L&L Supermarket in Lansing, MI.
2008 - L&L Food Centers operates 10 supermarkets in the Lansing area.

 

LANECO  (Pennsylvania)
Laneco SuperCenters ~ Food Lane ~ Paramount Foods

1946 - Ray Bartolacci founded Paramount Foods in Easton, PA.  First days sales receipts totaled $ 18.00.
1964 - Laneco opened its first food/drug combination store.
1965 - Laneco opened its first department store.
1983 - The company was acquired by Wetterau, Inc.
1992 - SuperValu acquired Laneco from Wetterau, Inc..
2001 - SuperValu closed the Laneco chain.

 

LARRY'S MARKETS  (Washington)

1964 - Larry's Markets was founded in Seattle, WA.
2006 - While operating 6 supermarkets in the Seattle area, Larry's Markets file for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection and is sold
          to various buyers.

LUNARDI'S MARKETS  (California)

1953 - Alfredo Lunardi founded Lunardi's Markets in San Francisco when he purchased Mother's Market.
2008 - The Lunardi family operates 8 supermarkets in the San Francisco area.

 

LOWES FOODS  (North Carolina)

1954 - Lowes Foods was founded in Wilksboro, NC.
1984 - The company was acquired by Merchants Distributors, Inc. and an aggressive expansion program began.
1990's - Lowes launched its FreshSmart stores.
1997 - Lowes Foods acquired 43 stores from Byrd's Food Stores.
2000 - Lowes purchased 13 former Hannaford locations.
2008 - The company operates 98 stores in NC, 3 in SC and 2 in VA.

LUNDS / BYERLY'S  (MINNESOTA)
Rick's Markets ~ PraireStone Pharmacies

1922 - Russell Lund began working a Hoves grocer store in Minneapolis, MN.  Lund experimented with pre-popped packaged
          popcorn and began selling his product to Hoves (Red E Popt Popcorn Co.).
1939 - Lund partnered with the owners of Hoves and opened a supermarket in Minneapolis.
1964 - The store is renamed Lunds.
1968 - Don Byerly founded Byerly's in Minneapolis.
1997 - Lunds acquired Byerly's.
2004 - Lunds acquires Rick's Markets.
2008 - Lunds operates 22 supermarkets under the Lunds and Byerly's banners and in-store pharmacies under the PrairieStone
          banner.
