1979 - Marc Glassman opened a drugstore in Middleburg Heights, OH.
2008 - Marc's operates over 50 food/drug/general merchandise discount stores in Ohio.

 

MARKET BASKET (Texas)
Lucky 7 ~ Marcado de Familia

1962 - Market Basket is founded in Texas as a voluntary chain for independent grocers.
2008 - By acquiring former chain supermarket locations, Market Basket has grown to 29 Market Basket stores, 1 Lucky 7
          store, 1 Mercado de Familia and Market Basket Express convenience store.

(DeMoula's) MARKET BASKET (New England)

1917 - Greek immigrants Athanasios ("Arthur") and Efrosini Demoulas opened a grocery store in Lowell, MA.
1954 - The original owners sold the store to two of their children.
1969 - The company operates 15 supermarkets.
1997 - There were 57 DeMoulas Super Market and Market Basket stores throughout Massachusetts and New Hampshire.

MARS SUPER MARKETS  (Maryland)

1943 - Joseph D'Anna founded Mars Super Markets in Essex, MD.
1945 - Mars opened its second store.
1946 - Mars closed both stores and opened a larger store in
Dundalk, MD.
1954 - Mars opened a second store not far from the original Mars.
2008 - Mars operates 18 supermarkets in MD.

O'Malia's Foods ~ Village Pantry ~ LoBill ~ Arthur's Fresh Markets

1931 - Ermal Marsh opened his first store in Muncie, IN.
1950's - Marsh opened his first supermarket under the name Marsh Foodliner.
1953 - Marsh became a publicly traded company with 16 stores.
1966 - Marsh launched its Village Pantry convenience store chain.
2008 - Marsh operates 69 Marsh Supermarkets,  6 Marsh Hometown Markets, 8 O'Malia's Foods markets, 162 Village Pantry
          convenience stores, 31 Lo Bill Foods stores and 2 Arthur's Fresh Markets in IN and OH.

1947 - Jane and Martin Tarnow founded Martin's Super Markets in South Bend, IN.
2008 - Family-owned Martin's Super Markets operates 20 stores in Indiana and Michigan.

 

MAYFAIR MARKETS (California)

1964 - Arden Farms acquires the Los Angeles-based Mayfair Markets chain.  Arden also acquired the Los Angeles-based
          Gelson's Supermarket chain around this time.
2007 - Gelson's Supermarkets operates 1 Mayfair Market location in Hollywood, CA.

2008 - Mega operates 3 Pick 'n Save supermarkets, and a chain of Mega Express convenience store/gasoline stations.

MEGAFOODS  (Arizona)
Handy Andy
1987 - Dean Miller founded Megafoods in Phoenix, AZ.
1988 - There are 4 Megafoods stores in operation in AZ.
1989 - There are 8 Megafoods stores in operation in AZ.
1990 - Megafoods opens 6 new stores.
1991 - There are 15 Megafoods stores in AZ and CA.
1992 - Megafoods becomes a publicly traded company.
1992 - Megafoods has 22 stores in AZ, CA and NV.
1993 - Megafoods acquired 15 Kroger stores in San Antonio, TX.  The company now has 46 stores throughout the Southwest.
1994 - Megafoods acquired 28 Handy Andy Stores in San Antonio, TX. from Frank Sepulveda.
1994 - With 71 stores in 4 states Megafoods filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection.
1995 - Megafoods closed its CA stores and was operating 50 stores in AZ, NV and TX.
1997 - Megafoods sold its 20 remaining Handy Andy stores back to Frank Sepulveda.
1997 - Basha's Supermarkets acquires Megafoods.

MEIJER  (Michigan)

1934 - Dutch immigrant Hendrik Meijer founded Meijer's in Greenville, MI.
1960 - Meijer's operates over two dozen supermarkets in Western Michigan.
1962 - The first Meijer's Thrifty Acres hypermarket is opened in Kalamazoo, MI.
2007 - Meijer's operates hypermarkets in MI, IL, IN, OH and KY.

MILGRAM FOOD STORES  (Missouri)

1913 - Nat Milgram founded Milgram Food Stores in Kansas City, MO.
1928 - With 37 stores, Milgram sold the company to Kroger.
1932 - Milgram re-entered the food business and founded Milgram Food Stores, Inc.
1968 - Milgram acquired 31supermarkets in Arkansas, Oklahoma and southern Missouri.
1984 - Wetterau acquired the 36-store Milgram Food Stores chain.

 

MINYARD'S  (Texas)
Carnival Food Stores ~ Carnival Super Markets ~ Sack 'N Save Wholesale Food Stores

1932 - Minyard's is founded in East Dallas, TX by A.W. "Eck" Minyard.  Two additional stores opened shortly after.
1942 - As America entered World War II, all but the original store were closed.
1957 - Minyard's operated 7 stores.
1960 - Sales reached $ 15 million and Minyard's operates 11 stores.
1969 - Minyard's operates 16 stores.
1979 - Minyard's opened its first super store in Mesquite, TX.
1982 - Minyard's operated 53 stores.
1982 - Minyard's launched its Sack 'n Save Warehouse Food Store banner.
1987 - The company acquires 27 former Safeway locations.  The company operated 62 Minyard's stores and 10 Sack 'n Save
          stores.
1990 - Minyard's launched its Carnival Food Stores Hispanic grocery stores.
1997 - The company entered the gasoline business with the opening of 2 gas stations adjacent to Minyard's locations.
2004 - Acquisition Vehicle Texas II, LLC, a Texas-based investment company acquired Minyard's.
2008 - The company operates 61 supermarkets, 36 pharmacies and 15 gas stations in the Dallas/Fort Worth area under the
           Minyard, Sack 'n Save and Carnival Food Stores banners.

MOLLIE STONE'S MARKETS  (California)

1985 - Mollie Stone's Markets was founded by Mike Stone and David Bennett in Mill Valley, CA.
2008 - The company operates 8 Mollie Stone's Markets in the San Francisco area.
