McCRORY STORES

1882 - John McCrorey opened his first store in Scottdale, PA.  (McCrorey legally changed his name to McCrory without the "e"
          in order to save money on his store's signs.)
1885 - The chain operated 5 stores in PA.
1899 - Sebastian S. Kresge, an early investor in McCrory's stores, traded his interest in McCrory's Memphis store for McCrory's
          interest in Kresge's Detroit store, enabling him to found S.S. Kresge Co. (later Kmart).
1901 - The company operated 20 stores with sales of almost $ 500,000.00.
1911 - McCrory operated 69 stores.
1915 - McCrory operated 128 stores and the company is incorporated as McCrory Corporation.
1922 - McCrory operated 159 stores.
1933 - A victim of the Great Depression, with 203 stores, McCrory Corp. filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection.
1936 - United Stores Corp. bought a majority interest in both McCrory Corp. and McLellan Stores.
1959 - United Stores merged McLellan Stores and H.L. Green Co. stores into McCrory Stores.  The merged company,
          McCrory-McLellan-Green (M.M.G.) operate approximately 850 stores.
1960 - Rapid-America Corp. acquired a 50% share of United Stores, Corp.
1961 - McCrory acquired Lerner Stores.
1972 - McCrory (650 stores) acquired J.J. Newberry Co. (439 stores).  The combined company is named G. McNew.
1975 - The company's named is changed from G. McNew to McCrory Stores.
1976 - McCrory Stores acquired 15 former W.T. Grant locations.
1980 - The company acquired 8 Neisner Brothers stores.
1981 - McCrory acquired 46 S.H. Kress and V.J. Elmore stores from the S.H. Kress Co.
1986 - McCrory acquired TG&Y stores (720 stores).
1987 - McCrory acquires all of Kmart's remaining S.S. Kresge and Jupiter stores in the US.
1989 - McCrory sold its Bargain Time chain to a unit of Rapid-America.
1992 - McCrory Stores filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection and began closed 250 of its approximately 1,000 stores.
2001 - The company closed all of its remaining stores and ceased operations.

At its height, McCrory operated over 1,300 stores under the McCrory, McLellan, H.L. Green, Silvers, G.C. Murphy, J.J. Newberry and Bargain Time banners.

H.L. GREEN CO.

1932 - Harold L. Green, a former president of Metropolitan Chain Stores, Inc., founded the H.L. Green Co.
1935 - The company operated 133 stores, mostly as a result of the acquisition of Metropolitan Chain Stores, F & W Grand Stores,
           Isaac Silver and Brothers Co, and F & W Grand-Silver Stores, Inc.
1957 - H.L. Green Co. acquired Mobile, AL-based Olen Company and operates a combined 227 stores.
1959 - The company acquired United Stores Corp., which owned a significant share of McCrory Stores and McLellan Stores.
          H.L. Green Co, is merged with McCrory Stores and McLellan Stores.
1960 - Rapid-America Corp. acquired a 50% share of United Stores Corp.
1960 - H.L. Green Co. sold United Stores to B.T.L. Corp. which owned Ben Franklin Stores.
1961 - McCrory Stores acquired H.L. Green Co.  H.L. Green Co.'s Canadian stores are sold to Metropolitan Stores.

McLELLAN STORES

1917 - William McLellan purchased a small variety store chain in North Carolina.
1933 - With 275 stores, McLellan Stores entered bankruptcy, a victim of the Great Depression.
1936 - United Stores Corp. bought a majority interest in both McCrory Corp. and McLellan Stores.
1958 - McLellan Stores is acquired by McCrory Stores.

G.C. MURPHY CO. ~ MURPHY'S MART

1899 - George C. Murphy leaves his job at McCrory's and opens his first store in Pittsburgh, PA.
1904 - Murphy sells his Pittsburgh-area stores to F.W. Woolworth Co.
1906 - George C. Murphy founded the G.C. Murphy Co. in McKesport, PA.  Murphy was a cousin of John G. McCrorey (McCrory
           Stores). 
1909 - George C. Murphy passed away.
1911 - Two McCrory executives, John Mack and Walter Shaw purchased the G.C. Murphy Co., which operated 12 stores at the
          time.
1931 - The company is listed on the New York Stock Exchange.
1934 - Sales reach $ 28 million as G.C. Murphy Co. operated 181 stores in 11 states.
1950 - The company acquired Morris Department Stores (OH, IN and IL).
1955 - The company began opening larger stores in shopping centers.  Up to this point, most stores were "Main Street" stores.
1959 - G.C. Murphy Co. purchased the 112-store Morgan & Lindsay department store chain in the southern U.S.
1961 - The company acquired the 17-store, TX-based Terry Farris Department Store chain.  Between 1960 and 1962, G.C. Murphy
          acquired several TX-based department store chains including Cobb Department Stores (4 stores), Brunner's Department
          Stores ( 7 stores) and Morris Department Stores.
1970 - C.G. Murphy launched its Murphy's Mart discount department store format with the opening of a Murphy Mart store in
          Bethel Park, PA.
1976 - The company operated 529 stores under the G.C. Murphy and Murphy's Mart banners.
1985 - G.C. Murphy Co. was acquired by Ames Department Stores.  The Murphy's Mart stores are renamed Ames.  The
          Murphy stores are operated as a separate division by Ames.
1989 - Ames Department Stores sells the remaining 100 G.C. Murphy stores to McCrory Stores.

At its height, G.C. Murphy Co. operated over 500 stores under the G.C. Murphy Co., Murphy's Mart, Bargain World,
Morgan & Lindsay, Terry Farris, Morris Department Stores, Bruners Department Stores and Cobbs Department Stores banners.

1911 - The J.J. Newberry Co. was founded in Stroudsburg, PA by John J. Newberry, a former S.H. Kress employee.
1918 - The company operated 7 stores.
1919 - Newberry's operated 17 stores with sales of $ 500,000.00.
1954 - The company operated 475 stores.
1961 - The company operated 565 stores.
1972 - With 439 stores, J.J. Newberry Co. is acquired by McCrory Stores.

1935 - TG&Y is founded in Oklahoma City, OK.
          At its height, TG&Y operated over 900 stores doing business under the TG&Y Family Center, TG&Y Dollar,
          Aim For The Best and Dollar-T banners.
1986 - With 720 stores, the company was acquired by McCrory Stores.
