NASH FINCH CO.

1885 - Brothers Fred, Edgar and Willis Nash operated a small candy and tobacco store in Devils Lake, ND.
1889 - The brothers began wholesaling fruit.
1891 - The company was entirely in the wholesale fruit business.
1918 - The company owned 31 fruit houses.
1921 - The Nash brother's enterprises were incorporated into 2 companies:  Nash Finch Co. in the United States and
          Nash-Simington Ltd in Canada.
1930's - Nash Finch sold its Canadian operations.
1954 - Nash Finch entered the retail grocery industry by purchasing a chain of 17 supermarkets in Nebraska.
1960's - The company launched First Family Thrift Center supermarket/general merchandise combination stores.
1964 - Nash Finch launched its Warehouse Market no-frills supermarkets.
1981 - The company's annual sales reach $ 1 billion.
1988 - The company's annual sales reach $ 2 billion.
2008 - With annual sales of over $ 4.6 billion, Nash Finch supplies independent supermarkets and operates company-owned
          stores under the Avanza Supermarket, Econo Foods, Family Thrift Center, Food Bonanza, Prairie Market,
          Sun Mart Foods and Wholesale Food Outlet banners.

NATIONAL FOOD STORES
1899 - National Tea Company is founded in Chicago, IL.
1920 - The company operates 160 stores.
1929 - National Tea Company has 1,600 stores.
1945 - The company is the 6th largest retail grocery chain in the U.S.
1947 - National Tea enters the Indianapolis market with the purchase of the 48-store Standard Grocery Company chain.
1956 - National Tea Company is acquired by Canada-based George Weston Ltd. (Loblaw's).
1994 - The company operates 86 supermarkets in the St. Louis and New Orleans markets.
1995 - Schnuck's acquired the remaining 49 National Tea Company stores in MO and IL.
1995 - With 18 stores, Schwegmann's acquired 28 New Orleans area National Food Stores locations.
1996 - Schnuck's sold 23 of these stores to the newly formed Family Company of America who reopens the stores under the National Supermarkets name.
1999 - Family Company of America went bankrupt.

1917 - Fred and Steve Neimann opened their frist grocery store in Illinois.
1930 - The company was operating 10 grocery stores and a wholesale grocery.
1940 - Neimanns opened their first self-service supermarket.
2008 - The company operates more than 60 supermarkets under the County Market, Cub Foods and Save-A-Lot banners.

2008 - New Seasons Markets operated 9 supermarkets in Oregon.

 

NICHOLAS MARKETS  (Foodtown)
1943 - Nicholas Markets is fiunded when N. Nicholas Maniaci opened a grocery store in North Haledon, NJ.
2006 - The company operates 4 supermarkets in Northern New Jersey under the Super Foodtown banner and 2 Grand Opening liquor stores.

NORKUS ENTERPRISES  (Foodtown)
1935 - Francis Norkus opens a grocery stores called Table Talk in Freehold, New Jersey.
1950's - Norkus Enterprises opens its first supermarket under the Foodtown (Twin County Grocers) cooperative in Freehold, NJ.
2006 - Norkus Enterprises operates 7 supermarkets in New Jersey under the Foodtown and Super Foodtown banners.

NUGGET MARKETS (California)
1926 - William Stille and his son Mack founded Nugget Markets in Woodland, CA.
1979 - The company, now run by Mack's son, opens a second store.
1984 - Nugget Markets purchased 2 former Alpha Beta supermarket locations.
1990 - The company opened its first Food 4 Less franchised store.
