1956 - Supermarkets
Operating Co. is formed in New Jersey and opens a store under the
ShopRite banner.
1963 - The company acquires Crown Drugs.
1966 - Supermarkets Operating Co. merges with General Super Markets
(another ShopRite member). The combined company
operated 75
ShopRite supermarkets in NJ, NY, Ct, DE and PA.
1968 - Supermarkets General left the ShopRite cooperative (Wakefern)
and renamed its stores Pathmark. The company
operated 81
Pathmark supermarkets, 11 freestanding drug
stores, 11 gasoline stations and the Rickel Home Centers
chain.
1971 - Pathmark operated 91 supermarkets, 24 Pathmark gasoline
stations and 14 Pathmark drugstores.
1972 - 94 of the company's 96 supermarkets went to a 24/7 format.
1974 - Pathmark becomes a pioneer in computer scanners at checkouts.
1977 - Pathmark launched its "Super Center" format which included
huge discount grocery stores, pharmacies and mini-banks.
1978 - The company operates 109 supermarkets.
1982 - With 121 supermarkets and sales of $ 2.8 billion, Pathmark is
one of the 10 largest supermarket chains in the country.
1984 - Supermarkets General acquires MA-based Purity Supreme (66
supermarkets).
1986 - Supermarkets General sells its department store division.
1987 - In order to avoid a takeover by Dart Group Corp.,
Supermarkets General became a privately held company.
1989 - Pathmark has 142 supermarkets and slips from the #1 grocery
chain in the New York area to #3.
1991 - Pathmark sells its Purity Supreme supermarkets to Freeman
Spogli & Co. (investment company).
1992 - The company launches its Pathmark 2000 format which are even
larger than its Super Centers and included a UPS
shipping counter
and a health and beauty aids section which would
rival drugstores and discount stores.
1993 - Supermarkets General has 146 supermarkets and 33 freestanding
drug stores.
1994 - The company's Rickel Home Centers division is sold.
Pathmark once again becomes the #1 supermarket chain in the
New York
City area.
1995 - Pathmark sold 30 of its freestanding drugstores to Rite Aid
and closed the remaining 6.
2000 - Supermarkets General Corp. filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy
protection and emerges later the same year under the name
Pathmark
Stores Inc.
2005 - Pathmark operates 142 supermarkets in NJ, NY, CT, DE and PA.
2006 - Pathmark is acquired by A&P.
