1930 - George Jenkins founded Publix grocery store in Winter Haven, FL.  The store established a reputation for cleanliness
          which still exists today.
1940 - Jenkin's opened Florida's first supermarket.  These supermarkets were air conditioned.
1945 - Publix acquired the 19-store Florida-based All American Grocery Co.
1951 - The company moved its headquarters to Lakeland, FL and where it built its first food distribution warehouse.
1956 - Sales reach over $ 50 million and profits are over $ 1 million for the first time.
1957 - Each store's donut shop is expanded to full service bakeries named "The Danish Bakery".
1959 - As the leading supermarket chain in central Florida, Publix expands into South Florida with the purchase of 7 stores there.
1962 - Publix has 85 stores.
1963 - The company built its first South Florida grocery distribution warehouse in Miami.
1969 - Publix has 169 stores.
1970 - Sales surpass $ 500 million for the first time.
1974 - Sales surpass $ 1 billion for the first time.
1980 - Publix became the first large grocery chain to use UPC barcode scanning.
1980's - After over 50 years of resistance, Publix gives in to competitive demands and begins opening on Sundays.
1982 - The company's Presto! network of ATM's is launched.  ATM machines are installed at every store.
1986 - Publix opens its first in store pharmacy in Altamonte Springs, FL.
1989 - Sales surpass $ 5 billion for the first time.
1989 - Publix has 367 stores.
1991 - Publix ventures outside Florida with the opening of a store in Savannah, GA.
1993 - Publix expands into South Carolina.
1996 - Publix expands into Alabama.  George Jenkins passed away.
1997 - Publix settles a class action sex discrimination lawsuit by paying $ 81.5 million in damages to its female employees and instituting policy changes.
2000 - The company launches it Publix Pix convenience store chain.
2001 - PublixDirect on-line grocery shopping is test-marketed in the Miami, FL area.
2002 - Publix expands into Tennessee.
2003 - Citing little demand for on-line grocery shopping, the company discontinues PublixDriect.
2005 - Publix celebrates its 75th anniversary with over 800 supermarkets in FL, GA, SC, AL and TN.  It is the largest company
          in the U.S. with at least 50% employee ownership.  Sales are over $ 20 billion and profit is almost $ 1 billion.
2005 - The first Publix Sabor Hispanic-themed supermarket in Kissimmee, FL.
2006 - Publix has been listed by Fortune magazine as one of the "100 Best Companies to Work For" .
2006 - The company is in the process of launching its Publix GreenWise Markets chain of natural foods stores in Miami and West Palm Beach, FL.
2006 - Publix announces that it will open a Carrabba's Italian Market in Sarasota, FL in conjunction with the Carrabba's Italian
          Grill chain.
