SCHNUCK'S (Missouri)

1939 - Edwin and Anna Schnuck opened the first Schnucks store in north St. Louis, MO.
1952 - Schnuck Markets, Inc. opened its first major supermarket in Brentwood, MO.
1970 - Schnuck's begins to open pharmacy departments in its stores.
1985 - Schnuck's expanded into Kansas City, MO; Southern IL and Southern IN.
1995 - Schnucks acquired the assets of the National Tea Company grocery 49 store operations in MO and IL, a subsidiary of
          Loblaw Companies Limited.  Schnucks eventually sold 24 of the stores to Family Company of America.
1997 - Schnucks launched its internet-based grocery shopping service.
1997 - 7 Kansas City area Schnucks stores are sold to Hy-Vee.  Schnucks exits the Kansas City market.
1998 - Schnuks acquires the 3 store Logli Stores chain in Rockford, IL.
2002 - Schnucks expands into Wisconsin with the opening of the fifth Logli Supermarket in Janesville.
2002 - Schnucks expands into Tennessee and Mississippi when the company acquires the 12-store Seessel's supermarket
          division from Albertsons.
2005 - Schnucks expands into Iowa.
2006 - Schnucks operates 91 supermarkets in MO, IL, IN and IO.

SCHUETTE STORES  (Illinois)
1870 - Peter Schuette opened a general store in St. Rose, IL.
1930's - There were 14 Schuette Stores in operation.
1999 - The company operates 7 supermarkets under the SuperValu banner.

 

 

 

SCHWEGMANN'S

1869 - Schwegmann's Grocery & Bar is opened in New Orleans, LA.
1939 - John Schwegmann joined the family business.
1946 - Returning from World War II, John Schwegmann and his 2 brothers opened the first Schwegmann Brothers Giant Super
          Market.
1957 - Schwegamnn's has stores all over New Orleans that sell everything from gourmet foods to garden supplies.
1995 - With 18 stores, Schwegamnn's acquired 28 New Orleans area National Food Stores locations.
1996 - Schwegmann's is sold to
Kohlberg & Co.  Stores retain Schwegmann's name and are serviced by SuperValu.

SCOLARI'S FOOD & DRUG  (Nevada)
Warehouse Markets

1947 - The Scolari Family founded Scolari's in California.
1982 - Scolari's acquired Nevada-based Warehouse Markets chain.
1991 - The company changed its name to Scolari's Food & Drug.
2008 - Scolari's operates 13 stores in Nevada and 4 stores in California.

SEDANO'S  (Florida)

1962 - Sedano's was founded in Miami, FL.
2008 - The Sedano family operates 29 Hispanic supermarkets in the Miami area.

 

SENTRY FOODS  (Wisconsin)

1960's - Sentry Foods was founded by the Godfrey Family in Milwaukee, WI.
1980's - Fleming Companies, Inc. acquired Sentry Foods.
2000 - Fleming filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection.  Sentry locations were sold and are now independently owned.

1968 - United Grocers founded Sentry Supermarkets in Milwaukie, OR as a banner for independently-owned supermarkets.
1970 - 16 independently-owned supermarkets operate under the Sentry Supermarkets banner.
2008 - 5 independently-owned supermarkets operate under the Sentry Supermarkets banner.

SHULTZ SAV-O STORES  (Wisconsin)
Fresh Brands ~ Shultz Brothers Co. ~ Sav-U
1912 - The Shultz Brothers Co. was founded in Sheboygan, WI.
1949 - The company began franchising and supplying Piggly Wiggly Stores in Wisconsin.
1950 - Shultz Brothers began opening its own Piggly Wiggly stores.
1962 - The Shultz Brothers Co. became a publicly-traded company and changed its name to Shultz Sav-O Stores.
1982 - Shultz Sav-O acquired the Sav-U chain and expanded its territory to Illinois and Michigan.
1990 - Shultz Sav-O serviced 86 supermarkets, a third of which were company owned.
1998 - The company expanded into Iowa and Minnesota.
2001 - Fresh Brands acquired the 8 store, WI-based Dick's Supermarkets and brought them under the Piggly Wiggly banner.
2006 - The company merged with Certified Grocers Midwest.

 

SOUTHWEST SUPERMARKETS  (Arizona)
SW Desert Markets
1981 - Southwest Supermarkets was founded in Phoenix, AZ.
1995 - Southwest operates 25 Hispanic supermarkets in Arizona.
2001 - The company acquired 7 former ABCO Desert Market locations and operated them under their SW Desert Market banner.
2001 - Southwest Supermarkets filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection and closed its 32 supermarkets.  Basha's acquired
          22 of these locations and operates them under their Food City banner.

 

SPARKLE MARKETS  (Ohio)
1955 - Four independent grocers in Akron, OH join together to form Sparkle Markets.
2007 - There are 24 independently owned  Sparkle Markets in Ohio, West Virginia and Pennsylvania.

1917 - Spartan Stores is organized in Grand Rapids, MI by a group of 100 independent food retailers.
1918 - The company was granted a cooperative license.
1937 - 175 independent grocery retailers belong to the cooperative.
1943 - D & W Fresh Market is founded by Roy Woodrick and Sid DeVries in Grandville, MI as a franchisee of IGA.
1957 - The cooperative name is officially changed to Spartan Stores.
1967 - D & W began operating as D & W Food Centers.
1989 - Spartan Stores acquired Associated Grocers and later renamed it Capistar.
1995 - The company closed its Capistar subsidiary.
2000 - Spartan Stores merged with Seaway Food Town which added 39 supermarkets and 21 drug stores to its 116 stores.
          Spartan became a publicly traded company.
2003 - Spartan Stores sold its Food Town grocery stores and two of its convenience subsidiaries; L&L Jiroch and J.F. Walker.
2004 - The company changed the name of its Ashcraft's Markets, Great Day Food Centers and Prevo's Family Markets
          to either its Family Fare Supermarkets or Glen's Markets banners.
2005 -D & W sold its company-owned pharmacies to Minneapolis, MN-based Prairie Stone Pharmacy and renamed its
         supermarkets D & W Fresh Markets.
2006 - Spartan Stores acquired D&W Food Centers adding 16 supermarkets to its retail base for a total of 68 stores.
2007 - Spartan Stores acquired Felpausch Food Centers adding 20 supermarkets to its retail base for a total of 88 stores.

STAFF GOOD DEAL SUPERMARKETS  (NY, NJ)

1960's - Staff Good Deal operated supermarkets in New York and New Jersey.

STATER BROS.  (California)
1936 - Leo and Cleo Stater opened their first Stater Bros. Market in Yucaipa, CA.
1939 - The company operates 5 stores.
1940's - The company sold a 1/2 interest in each store to the store's manager.
1948 - Stater Bros. opened their first self-service supermarket in Riverside, CA.
1952 - The federal government decided that Stater Bros. had too many partners and sued the company.
1958 - The company is incorporated and all but 5 of the stores are consolidated into the corporation with the store managers
          receiving either cash or stock for their interest.
1964 - The remaining stores are brought into the corporation.
1979 - Stater Bros. operates 83 supermarkets.
1980 - Ten new stores are opened.
2008 - Stater Bros. operates 183 supermarkets in Southern California.

STAUFFERS OF KISSEL HILL  (Pennsylvania)
1932 - Roy Stauffer, Sr. opened a fruit stand in Kissel Hill, PA.
1937 - A fire destroyed the fruit stand and a new fruit stand was opened on his home's front lawn and construction began on a store.
1964 - The Stauffer family opened a second store.
2008 - Stauffer's of Kissel Hill operates 8 supermarkets and garden centers in Pennsylvania.
 

 

SULLIVAN FOODS  (Illinois)
1967 - Sullivan Foods was founded in Savanna, IL.
2008 - Sullivan Foods operates 13 stores under the Sullivan's and Save-A-Lot banners.

 

SUMMER FRESH SUPERMARKETS  (Missouri)
2008 - Summer Fresh Supermarkets operates 5 stores in Missouri.

 

SUNSET FOODS  (Illinois)
1937 - Sunset Foods was founded in Highland Park, IL.
2008 - A family-owned company, Sunset Foods operates 4 gourmet supermarkets in IL.
