1914 - Economy Grocery Stores Company is founded in Somerville, MA by the Rabinovitz family.
1918 - The store becomes self-service.
1946 - The company changes its name to Stop & Shop, Inc.
1961 - Stop & Shop purchased the Bradlees Dept. Store chain.
1980's - Stop & Shop sells its Medi Mart drugstore chain to Walgreen's.
1980 - Food Circus acquires 4 Stop & Shop supermarkets in New Jersey and operates them under the Foodtown banner.
1984 - Supermarkets General Corp. (Pathmark) acquires MA-based Purity Supreme (66 supermarkets).
1988 - Stop & Shop is acquired by investment firm
Kohlberg, Kravis Roberts.
1991 - Pathmark sells its Purity Supreme supermarkets to Freeman Spogli & Co. (investment company).
1992 - The Bradlees Dept. Store chain is spun off and becomes a publicly traded company.
1995 - Stop & Shop acquires New England-based Purity Supreme and renames the stores Stop & Shop.
1996 - Dutch supermarket firm Royal Ahold acquired Stop & Shop.
1996 - Royal Ahold's New England Edwards Super Foods Stores (Finast) are converted to Stop & Shop.
2000 - Royal Ahold converts its NY and NJ Edwards Super Food Stores to Stop & Shop.
2000 - Royal Ahold merges its remaining Edwards Super Food Stores with its Giant Carlisle division.
2004 - Royal Ahold merges its Stop and Shop and Giant Food chains to create its Giant Stop & Shop division.
2005 - Stop & Shop adds a Staples office supplies dept. in all of its supermarkets.
2006 - Stop & Shop operates 360 supermarkets in CT, MA, NH, NY, NJ and RI.

BRADLEES DEPARTMENT STORES
1958 - Bradlees Department Stores was founded in New London, CT (named after Bradley Airport where store planning
          meetings were held).
1961 - Stop & Shop Supermarkets acquired Bradlees.
1982 - Bradlees acquires the remaining 12 Two Guys stores.
1992 - Stop & Shop sells Bradlees and it became a publicly traded company.
1999 - The company emerged from Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection.
2000 - With 105 stores and 3 distribution centers in MA, CT, NH, ME, NY, NJ and PA, Bradlees, Inc. filed for Chapter 11
          bankruptcy protection and announced it would close all of its stores.
