1850's - George C. Shaw opened a small teashop in Portland, ME.  Maynard A. Davis established a group of small downtown
            grocery stores in MA and CT named Brockton Public Market.
1854 - Dierbergs was founded as a general store in St. Louis, MO.
1870 - B.S. Bull & Company is founded as a dry goods wholesaler.  The enterprise is short lived and its founders go on to
          create similar companies.
1919 - Davis purchased Shaw's company and made it a subsidiary of Brockton Public Market.
1924 - The Newell Company builds its first modern grocery warehouse in Minneapolis, MN.
1926 - The Newell Company merges with Winston, Harper & Fisher to create Winston & Newell Company.
1928 - Winston & Newell is one of the first distributors to affiliate with IGA.
1942 - Winston & Newell dissolve their affiliation with IGA and form the SuperValu and U-Save store banners for independent
          grocers.
1951 - Ted Hornbacher and Jim Custer opened the Moorhead Supervalu Store.
1954 - Winston & Newell changes its name to SuperValu.
1957 - Farm Fresh is founded as a neighborhood grocery store.
1966 - Sales by SulerValu-affiliated retailers exceed $ 1 billion for the first time.
1967 - SuperValu is listed on the New York Stock Exchange.
1971 - The ShopKo discount department store chain is acquired by SuperValu.
1975 - Hornabcher's is acquired by SuperValu.
1977 - Save-A-Lot is founded by Bill Moran as a limited-assortment grocery.
1978 - Brockton Public Market changed its name to Shaw's Supermarkets Inc.
1980 - Super Valu acquires the 5-store Minnesota-based Cub Foods chain.
1982 - The first Bristol Farms store is opened in Rolling Hills, CA.
1983 - Wetterau, Inc. acquired General Grocer Co.
1983 - Great Britain-based J. Sainsbury plc purchased 21% of Shaw's.
1984 - Bigg's supermarket/discount department store combination store is launched in Cincinnati, OH.
1984 - There are over 100 Cub Foods stores in operation in MN, WI and IL.
1984 - Save-A-Lot purchases 76 Jewel T stores.
1986 - Farm Fresh merges with Giant Open Air Markets.
1988 - Serving more than 3,100 stores in 32 states, SuperValu's affiliated retailer's combined sales make them the 2nd largest
          retailing group in the U.S.
1990 - Hornbacher's opens its first Hornbacher's Express.
1991 - The 18-store Fort Wayne, IN-based Scott's Foods chain is acquired by SuperValu.
1991 - Super Valu sells its ShopKo discount department store chain.
1992 - Super Valu celebrates its 50th anniversary and modifies its name to SUPERVALU Inc.
1992 - SuperValu purchases St. Louis-based Wetterau, Inc. (Shop 'n Save, Save-A-Lot).
1994 - SuperValu acquires Cincinnati-based Hyper Shoppes, Inc. (Bigg's).
1998 - Farm Fresh is acquired by Richfood Holdings.
1998 - Scott's Stores acquires
Kettsch Pharmacies.
1998 - SuperValu handles 15% of the U.S. food distribution business and completes the opening or acquisition of 73 stores.
1999 - SuperValu acquires Virginia-based Richfood Holdings (Virginia's Farm Fresh Food & Pharmacy, Metro stores and
          Shoppers Food Warehouse).
1999 - Deal$ dollar stores is founded by Tom Holley in St. Louis, MO.
1999 - The J. Sainsbury acquisitions makes Shaw's the 2nd largest grocery chain in New England.
2002 - The company acquires Deal$ (single-price general merchandise stores) and pairs them with its Save-A-Lot stores to
          create combination stores.
2003 - SuperValu and C&S Wholesale Grocers enter into an asset exchange. SuperValu assets in the Northeast go to C&S
          while C&S assets in Midwest go to SuperValu.
2004 - More than 30% of Save-A-Lot stores are converted to Save-A-Lot/Deal$ combination stores.
2004 - Albertsons acquires Shaw's from J. Sainsbury.
2006 - SuperValu opens its first Sunflower Market (natural and organic foods format).
2006 - SuperValu acquires most (1,124) Albertsons supermarkets and in-store Osco and Save-on Pharmacies. This acquisition
          makes SuperValu the 3rd largest supermarket chain in the U.S.  The Albertsons company's stores acquired:

  • Acme Markets (134 locations)
  • Acme Express, Jewel Express, and Albertsons Express (107 fuel centers)
  • Albertsons (564 locations)
  • Bristol Farms (11 locations)
  • Jewel and Jewel-Osco (198 locations)
  • Lazy Acres (1 location)
  • Max Foods (3 locations) (Later rebranded Lucky)
  • Osco Pharmacy and Sav-on Pharmacy (906 pharmacies)
  • Save-A-Lot (2 stores franchised by Shaw's)
  • Shaw's (188 locations)
  • Star Market (20 locations)

2006 - SuperValu operates 2,505 food and food/drug combination stores, 878 in-store pharmacies, 117 fuel centers and is
           wholesale distributor to 2,200 independently owned stores.
2006 - The company sells most of its Pittsburgh area Shop 'n Save stores to independent owners who continued to operate the
           stores under the Shop 'n Save banner.
2006 - SuperValu sells its Cub Foods chain.
2006 - SuperValu sells Deal$ to Dollar Tree stores.
2008 - SuperValu closes its Sunflower Market natural foods chain.

BIGG'S
1984 - The first Bigg's supermarket/discount department combination store is opened in Cincinnati, OH.
1994 - With 7 stores, Bigg's is acquired by SuperValu.
2006 - SuperValu operates 12 Bigg's stores in the Cincinnati and Northern Kentucky area.

CUB FOODS
1860 - Hooley's is founded in Minnesota.
1968 - Hooley's Supermarkets launches its Cub Foods (Consumers United for Buying) format in Stillwater, MN.
1980 - SuperValu acquires the 5-store Cub Foods chain.
1995 - Mike Lofino acquires the Miami Valley, OH Cub Foods stores and continues to operate them under the Cub Foods banner.
2006 - Following its acquisition of Chicago-based Jewel (Albertsons) SuperValu sells its Chicago-area Cub Foods stores.

DIERBERGS  (Missouri)
1854 - Dierbergs was founded as a general store in St. Louis, MO.
1967 - A second store is opened in St. Louis under the name Four Seasons.
1976 - A third stores is opened in Oakville, MO.
2008 - Dierbergs operates 22 stores in MO and IL with SuperValu as its principal supplier.

2006 - Albertsons Shaw's division is acquired by SuperValu.
2006 - SuperValu operates 215 Shaw's and Star Market stores in New England.

1979 - Shop 'n Save was founded in Belleville, IL.
1983 - Wetterau, Inc. acquires Shop 'n Save.
1992 - SuperValu acquires Wetterau, Inc.

SHOP 'n SAVE  (Pennsylvania)
Shop 'n Save is a grocery store chain with 54 stores in Pittsburgh and 16 stores in Northern West Virginia.  Some Shop 'n Saves were formerly owned by SuperValu until 2006, when the company decided to sell or close all their stores. However the brand still continues to struggle, and many former locations are now dark. Supervalu still supports Shop 'n Save's store inventory.

1949 - Jumbo Food Stores was founded in the Baltimore, MD.
1978 - Jumbo Food Stores opens its first warehouse format store.
1986 - Jumbo changes its name to Shoppers Food Warehouse.
1987 - The company has 18 stores in MD and VA.
1988 - Dart Group acquires a 50% interest in the company.
1996 - Shoppers Food Warehouse has 34 stores.
1998 - Richfood Holdings acquires Shoppers Food Warehouse.
1999 - Richfood Holdings is acquired by SuperValu.
2004 - SuperValu's 14 Washington, DC-area Metro food stores are converted to Shoppers Food Warehouse.
2005 - Shoppers Food & Pharmacy has 58 stores.
