and CT named Brockton Public Market. 1919 - Davis purchased Shaw's company and made it a subsidiary of Brockton Public Market. 1960's Shaw's opens stores in Northern MA and NH as Brockton Public Markets opened stores in Southern MA. 1978 - Brockton Public Market changed its name to Shaw's Supermarkets Inc. 1983 - Great Britain-based J. Sainsbury plc purchased 21% of the company. 1987 - J. Sainsbury acquired a controlling interest in Shaw's and New England-based Iandoli's supermarkets. 1990 - J. Sainsbury acquired New England-based Edwards Food stores. 1993 - J. Sainsbury acquired the Star Market Company. 1995 - Shaw's enters CT. 1996 - J. Sainsbury acquired 12 former Edwards Food store locations from Royal Ahold. 1999 - The J. Sainsbury acquisitions makes Shaw's the 2nd largest grocery chain in New England. 2004 - Albertsons acquires the company from J. stores. However the brand still continues to struggle, and many
former locations are now dark. Supervalu still supports Shop 'n
