1912 - Two brothers and
a cousin founded a grocery store (later Jitney Jungle) in Jackson,
MS.
1919 - The first store is opened under the Jitney Jungle banner as a
cash and carry grocer.
1925 - W.M. Davis
purchased Rockmoor Grocery in Miami, FL.
1927 - The company is renamed Table Supply.
1931 - The company purchases the Lively Stores chain for $
10,000.00. With the renaming of these stores to Table Supply,
stores now reach from Miami to Tampa.
1934 - W.M Davis passed away, leaving his sons in charge of the
company.
1939 - Table Supply acquires a 51% interest in the Winn & Lovett
chain of 73 stores.
1944 - The company is renamed Winn & Lovett. The company
headquarters is moved from Miami to Jacksonville.
1945 - Winn & Lovett purchases 31 Steiden Stores in Kentucky.
1945 - The company purchases the 46-store Margaret Ann chain.
1952 - Winn & Lovett becomes the first Florida industrial company to
be listed on the New York Stock Exchange.
1953 - The company acquires Mississippi-based Penny Stores and the
117-store Dixie Home Stores chain.
1953 - The company changes its name to Winn Dixie.
1955 - Ballentine Stores and Eden Stores, both based in South
Carolina, are acquired by Winn Dixie.
1956 - Winn Dixie acquires Georgia-based King Stores and Hill Stores
and Kettner-Milner Stores, both based in North Carolina.
1967 - Winn Dixie ventures into the Bahamas with the purchase of the
island's City Markets chain.
1969 - Winn Dixie operates 715 stores in the South.
1973 - Jitney Jungle has 38 grocery stores, 6 gasoline stations and
5 drug stores.
1984 - The company launches its larger format Winn Dixie Marketplace
with the opening of a store in Valdosta, GA.
1992 - Jitney Jungle has over 100 stores operating under several
different banners. (Jitney Jungle, Jitney Premier, Jitney
Super
Center, Pump & Save, Megamarket, Save Foods
and Mega Pantry).
1995 - Winn Dixie acquired 25 Thriftway Stores in Ohio.
1996 - The company experiments with self-checkouts at several
Florida stores.
1997 - Jitney Jungle acquires Delchamps stores. The FTC
requires Jitney Jungle to sell 10 stores (sold to SuperValu).
1999 - Jitney Jungle files for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection.
2000 - Winn Dixie purchased Jitney Jungle/Delchamps (68 supermarkets, 32 fuel centers and 2
liquor stores) in MS and AL and
rebrands them Winn Dixie.
2001 - AL-based Bruno's acquires 21 former Delchamps stores.
2000 - The company launches its SaveRite Grocery Warehouse format
with stores in Florida, Georgia and Mississippi.
2002 - Winn Dixie enters the Texas and Oklahoma markets.
2004 - The company closes 156 stores, mostly in the Midwest,
including its Thriftway Stores in Ohio.
2005 - With over 1,000 stores, Winn Dixie files for Chapter 11
bankruptcy protection. The company operates stores under the
Winn Dixie, Winn Dixie Marketplace, and SaveRite banners in
the Southeast and City Markets in the Bahamas.
2006 - Winn Dixie sells its City Market stores in the Bahamas and
continues to operate under Chapter 11 bankruptcy
protection with 587
stores in FL, GA, AL and LA.
2007 - Winn Dixie emerged from bankruptcy protection.
