1878 - Frank W.
Woolworth founded the F.W. Woolworth Co. in Utica, NY.
1879 - The Utica, NY store failed and was closed. Woolworth
opened another store in Lancaster, PA.
1911 - With 596 stores, the company is incorporated as the F.W.
Woolworth Co.
1913 - Construction of the company's new headquarters, the Woolworth
Building in New York City, the world's tallest building until
1930, is completed.
1962 - Woolworth launched its Woolco discount department store
chain.
1963 - Woolworth acquired the Kinney Shoe Corp.
1966 - Woolworth operated 18 Woolco stores in the US and 9 in
Canada.
1967 - Woolworth acquired specialty retailer Stylco.
1968 - Woolworth acquired Susie Casuals.
1974 - Woolworth acquired Foot Locker.
1979 - Woolworth celebrated its 100th anniversary as the largest
department store chain in the world.
1983 - Woolworth closed all Woolco stores in the US.
1980's - Woolworth acquired specialty retailers Afterthoughts,
Northern Reflections and Best of Times.
1989 - Woolworth acquired Champs Sports and formed the Woolworth
Athletic Group.
1993 - Woolworth closed 800 of its Woolworth stores in the US.
1994 - Most Woolco stores in Canada are sold to Wal-Mart.
Remaing stores were converted to The Bargain! Shop.
1997 - All remaining Woolworth stores are closed. The company
is renamed Venator Group.
1997 - Woolworth acquired Eastbay, an athletic goods mail-order
company.
1999 - Woolworth sold The Bargain! Shop chain.
2001 - The company changed its name to Foot Locker Inc. |
